Try to cover to most common words in your target language, as they can make up as much as 50% of spoken language.
In many modern languages 800-1000 words are enough to cover the basic communication needs.
Create a goal - e.g to learn at least 10 words a day, revise consistently, play with these words, use flashcards..... monitor your progress, daily/weekly whatever works best for you.
Sometimes, instead of looking up the word for a new item, try and take a guess, some words are very similar.
Once you learnt a group of words, try and create a short story using these words. Try to paraphrase what you hear, using words that you already know, repeat out loud the words that you studied.
Make associations between words and pictures.... "place" the words in a familiar environment to recall them easier at any given time.
